A COUPLE suspected for being members of the New People’s Army on Friday were killed in an encounter in Misamis Oriental.

Slain were Jelan Pinakilid alias “Baking/Matrix,” an alleged secretary of the NPA, and his wife, Darling Pinakilid, a medic of the Squad 3, North Central Mindanao Regional Committee of the communist movement.

The couple were killed in a clash with the authorities in Bgy. Odiongan, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

Members of the 402nd Infantry Brigade were conducting intelligence operations when they received a report that a group of around five armed men were doing extortion activities in the village.

Soldiers, along with members of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Intelligence Unit immediately responded but were met with gunfire.

A gunfight ensued that led to the death of the couple.

Authorities said alias “Baking” was one of the most wanted men facing murder, frustrated murder and rebellion charges.

“While we extend our sympathies to the families of those killed, let this be, once again a visible reminder that CPP-NPA’s ideology is no longer fighting for the rights of the people but instead, it promotes injustices and terrors that bring sufferings to our community,” Brig. Gen Adonis Ariel Orio of the Philippine Army’s 402nd Brigade, said.
