NEWLY appointed secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) Atty. Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro on Wednesday said he is not in favor of having peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

The newly appointed Defense secretary stressed that he has always been against the idea of peace talks with the rebels.

“Why will we enter into peace talks when they can go back and run for public office? This is really a violation of our democratic process,” Teodoro said.

Teodoro explained that there are existing political processes under the Constitutions for the CPP, adding that their struggle is “not about ideology” but about taking power.

Teodoro, who first served as DND secretary during the Arroyo administration, said “he is not convinced” about the ideology part of the CPP because it is all about “getting or taking power for whatever reason.”

“The ideology part, I have never been convinced that it is ideological. It’s all getting, taking power for whatever reason. Even in other countries, I mean, the sole authority of the communist party in other countries is a dictatorship in itself,” Teodoro explained.

Asked about the issue of “reg-tagging,” the newly appointed Defense secretary said that any violation of the law is “reprehensible and should be disciplined.”

In line with this, Teodoro acknowledged the achievement of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) – the group which has been linked to incidents of red-tagging by various groups – in its job.
