Navotas ice plant shut down due to ammonia leak

NAVOTAS City Mayor John Rey Tiangco ordered the closure of an ice plant after an ammonia leak occurred on Tuesday evening forcing all workers and their relatives to evacuate the place.

Navotas City Fire Station investigator FO1 Donnalyne Aquino said 12 workers and three of their relatives who were staying inside ng 168 Tube Ice Corp. located at No. 1054 M. Naval St. Bgy. North Bay Boulevard-Kaunlaran were forced to leave the plant at around 11:57 due to an ammonia leak.

Personnel of the Navotas Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) immediately responded to the area and were able to close the valve plate inside the compressor room where the leak occurred and declared it under control at around 12:10 a.m. Wednesday.

Mayor Tiangco said no injuries or casualties were reported since the ice plant was far from residential houses in Barangay NBB-Kaunlaran while responding policemen and personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) temporarily closed the area to traffic to protect motorist from harm.

The mayor added that even the 12 workers and their relatives who were forced to evacuate the ice plant were already in good shape and had no need for medical attention.

Navotas Fire Station chief F/Supt. Jude Delos Reyes said they are still in the process of conducting investigation to see if the plant owner, identified as certain Robert Sytico, followed the regular maintenance procedure of the plant before they will be given the go signal to operate.

Meanwhile, CDRRMO chief Vonne Villanueva said they will wait for the Navotas BFP to finish their investigation and see to it that the plant management will comply with all the requisites needed before they recommend for the resumption of the ice plant operation.
