Narcs seize nearly P49-M worth of shabu in NAIA T-1
GOVERNMENT agents on Thursday afternoon foiled an attempt to smuggle a huge volume of shabu in the country following the arrest of a 64-year-old Canadian national who yielded nearly P49-million worth of illegal drugs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s Terminal 1, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency chair Director General Moro Virgilio M. Lazo said yesterday.
According to the official, members of the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group arrested Wendy Jane Marais, described as a ‘consultant’ from Canada after her checked-in baggage yielded seven chocolate bags found to be concealing 7.150 kilograms of shabu worth P48,620,000.
The arrest was made at the Customs International Arrival Area of the NAIA Terminal 1 in Pasay City where the accused tried to pick-up her checked-in- baggage past 2 p.m.
The suspect arrived on board Japan Airlines Flight JL 741 from Narita, Japan. A record check showed that the JAL flight originated from Mexico.
Director General Lazo ordered the PDEA National Capital Region Office led by Director Arvin Targa to launch a full investigation into the foiled drug smuggling attempt in coordination with other members of the NAIA-IADITG and their foreign counterparts.
The suspect was charged with violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 for importation of prohibited drugs. She was the second foreigner to be arrested by government agents for drug smuggling at the NAIA this month.
