AGENTS of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-DITG) on Sunday evening arrested a 41-year-old female Malagasy Republic (formerly known as Madagascar) national for smuggling some six kilograms of shabu worth P40.8 million at the NAIA Terminal 1 (T1) in Pasay City, a report to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Rodolfo S. Azurin Jr. said Monday.

PNP Drug Enforcement Group (PNP-DEG) Director Brigadier Gen. Narciso D. Domingo said the suspect, a stock trader, resident of Ambodinisotry, Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The official said that the suspect arrived in the country on board Ethiopian Airline Flight ET 644 from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was placed under arrest around 9:45 p.m. Sunday at the NAIA T1 Customs International Arrival Area by members of the NAIA-DITG.

Confiscated from the possession of the suspect was black luggage with assorted clothes, shoes, and an improvised pouch found containing the huge volume of the so-called “poor man’s cocaine.”

The pouch was covered and wrapped with carbon paper and sealed with packing tape in an apparent effort to hide its contents.

However, NAIA-DITG authorities suspected it contained “drugs” when it passed thru an X-ray machine, prompting them to subject it to further cursory examination.

An investigator said the suspect “denied” knowledge or ownership of the illegal drugs found in her luggage.

The suspect was placed under investigation by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), which will also file criminal charges for smuggling of drugs against the suspect under Republic Act (RA) No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, said PDEA chair, Director General Moro Virgilio M. Lazo.

Last Friday, NAIA-DITG operatives also arrested in a controlled delivery operation in Pasay City, a woman who claimed a parcel containing nearly P80 million of shabu.

The suspect, 33, is now facing charges for the importation of prohibited drugs under RA 9165.

The suspect was arrested at the NAIA Complex in Pasay City after claiming the parcel, shipped by a “general trading” firm with an address at Plot Khasra No. 1310/95 Main Umer Khan Road, Near Edan Academy Main GT Road, Link Kambo Sto, Lahore Punjab, Pakistan.

The parcel was found containing a total of 11,756 grams of the so-called “poor man’s cocaine” valued at P79,940,800 during an X-ray examination and cursory check.

The suspect was placed under arrest after she presented two identification cards to claim the parcel.

She is now being held at the PDEA lock-up facility in Quezon City. BY ALFRED DALIZON & JUN I. LEGASPI
