PHILIPPINE National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) Director Major General Eliseo DC Cruz, on Monday announced the capture of a 56-year-old murder suspect after 31 years in hiding.

“This is another proof that the long arm of the law will always catch up with a lawbreaker,” said the PNP-CIDG director in referring to the arrest of Lito Duque, a native of Pangasinan who was tracked down in his hiding place in Barangay San Jose in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao last April 25 by CIDG Pangasinan Provincial Field Unit and local police operatives.

According to Maj. Gen. Cruz, the suspect, is the subject of a non-bailable warrant of arrest for murder issued by Judge Nicodimo Ferrer of the Lingayen, Pangasinan Regional Trial Court Branch 38 on January 9, 1991

When interviewed shortly after his arrest, the suspect claimed he acted in “self-defense” when he killed the victim. A brother of the suspect also died in that incident.

However, the accused claimed he went into hiding and never had the chance to defend himself in court.

Maj. However, Gen. Cruz said that the suspect has been tagged as the 6th most wanted person in Pangasinan, where he is believed to be the leader of a gun-for-hire and gun-running syndicate.

“The law may be hard to observe and obey, but it is the law and must be followed and enforced just the same. Regardless of the reasons behind the commission of the crime or evading arrest, the CIDG will remain steadfast in imposing the laws and have offenders liable for the crimes they committed,” the official said.
