MMDA blames outmoded drainages for flooding, waits for enough budget
THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) blamed the outmoded and insufficient drainages plus the limited budget for flood control projects in the National Capital Region after the massive flooding in Metro Manila last week brought by typhoon Carina.
MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Romando “Don” Artes said that the MMDA is working on the approved budget for the agency’s flood control projects amounting to P2,720,308, of which P2,264,459,000 is for capital outlay and P395,565,000 for maintenance and other operating expenses for 71 pumping stations.
The MMDA also pointed out the frequent dumping of garbage on outdated and insufficient drainage infrastructure added to the issues behind the floodings in the metropolis despite consistent cleanup operations.
“The drainages in the metropolis are already outdated with the majority of drainage mains constructed dating back to the 1970s,” Artes said.
