THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday recorded its 79th COVID-19 fatality even as it noted a decreasing trend of virus infections among its personnel vis-à-vis an increase in the number of those who have fully recovered from the disease

PNP chief, General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar said the 79th fatality was a 51-year old policeman from Mindanao who passed away last Sunday.

“I would like to give our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of our latest Covid-19 fatality, a 51-year old policeman assigned in Cotabato City,” Gen. Eleazar said.

A report from the PNP Heath Service said the policeman tested positive for COVID-19 last July 9 and was admitted to a nearby hospital for further examination.

He was declared dead last Sunday by his attending physician due to pneumonia.

PNP-HS director, Brigadier Gen. Luisito P. Magnaye said the 79th fatality is also immuno-compromised due to diabetes, hypertension, intestinal parasitism and hyperthyroidism.

Gen. Eleazar said that on Wednesday, they recovered 45 new cases bringing to 29,476 the number of police personnel who have contacted the virus.

There are also a total of 1,192 ‘active cases’ being monitored by the PNP-HS to date.
