MANILA Mayor Maria Sheila “Honey” Lacuna-Pangan personally inspected yesterday morning the ongoing rehabilitation of Lagusnilad Vehicular Underpass by the Manila Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW).

The mayor was accompanied by City Engineer Armand Andres who assisted and explained the progress and corresponding steps being taken to ensure that they will meet the target completion of the project by September.

Included in the full rehabilitation of the historic vehicular underpass were the improvement of the drainage system and upgrading of its pumping station to prevent flooding during the rainy season and concreting of the road for the safety of the passing motorists.

Mayor Honey earlier stated that a total of P75 million will be spent for the rehabilitation of Lagusnilad. P50 million will come from the Manila city government and P25 million from the national government through the office of 5th District Congressman Irwin Tieng.

The city chief executive decided that the local government should shoulder the full rehabilitation of Lagusnilad Vehicular Underpass even it was under the control and supervision of the national government, being a part of the national road, since the area was not only under their jurisdiction but complaining motorists who got stuck in the heavy traffic or being involved in vehicular accident in the area usually approached them.

At present, the rehabilitation of Lagusnilad creates heavy traffic on Taft Avenue in front of Manila City Hall. Motorists were advised to take alternate routes.
