‘Maring’ death toll climbs to 30

THE death toll from severe tropical storm “Maring” climbed to 30, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

NDRRMC spokesperson Mark Timbal said 14 of the fatalities were from Ilocos Sur, nine from Benguet, four from Palawan, two from Cagayan, and one from Pangasinan.

Of the number of deaths, 19 have been confirmed by the authorities while 11 remain for verification.

The NDRRMC also reported 14 missing – five from Palawan, three in Ilocos Sur, three in La Union, one in Benguet, one in Ilocos Norte, and one in Pangasinan.

Three people were injured, all from Benguet, due to the landslide.

According to the NDRRMC, “Maring” has affected a total of 50,040 families or 194, 677 individuals from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4-B, 6, CARAGA and CAR.

Some 1, 775 families or 7, 370 persons are still seeking shelter in evacuation centers.

Farmers affected by “Maring” appealed to the government for support after their crops were destroyed by the storm.
