‘Marce’ intensifies, signal no. 4 up in Cagayan, other areas
TYPHOON Marce (international name Yinxing) further intensified as it “dangerously approaches” northeastern Cagayan, the weather bureau, in its 11 a.m. bulletin, said yesterday.
“Marce” packs maximum sustained winds of 175 km per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kph, and was located 115 km. east of Aparri, Cagayan as of 10 a.m.
More areas were placed under tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) no. 4: the northern portion of Cagayan (Gonzaga, Santa Ana, Santa Teresita, Lal-Lo, Buguey, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Gattaran, Ballesteros, Allacapan, Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria, Santa Praxedes, Lasam) including Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Apayao (Santa Marcela, Luna, Flora, Calanasan, Pudtol), and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Vintar, Dumalneg, Adams, Bacarra, Pasuquin, Burgos).Typhoon-force winds will prevail in these areas.
Signal no. 3 is hoisted over Batanes, the rest of Cagayan, the rest of Apayao, the rest of Ilocos Norte, the northern portion of Abra (Tineg, Danglas, Lagayan, Lacub, San Juan, La Paz, Bangued), and the northern portion of Ilocos Sur (Sinait, Cabugao, San Juan, Magsingal, Santo Domingo). These areas will experience storm-force winds.
Gale-force winds will prevail in areas under TCWS no. 2: the northern and central portions of Isabela (San Pablo, Santa Maria, Divilacan, Tumauini, Maconacon, Cabagan, Santo Tomas, Quezon, Palanan, Ilagan City, Mallig, Delfin Albano, Quirino, San Mariano, Gamu, Roxas, Naguilian, Burgos, Reina Mercedes, Benito Soliven, Luna, Aurora, San Manuel, San Mateo, Alicia, Angadanan, City of Cauayan, Cabatuan), the rest of Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, the northern portion of Ifugao (Alfonso Lista, Aguinaldo, Mayoyao, Banaue, Hungduan), the northern portion of Benguet (Bakun, Mankayan), the rest of Ilocos Sur, and the northern portion of La Union (Sudipen, Bangar, Balaoan, Luna, Santol).
Areas under signal no. 1 will experience strong winds: the rest of La Union, Pangasinan, the rest of Ifugao, the rest of Benguet, the rest of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, the northern and central portions of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao, Maria Aurora, Baler), the northern portion of Nueva Ecija (Carranglan), and the northern portion of Zambales (Santa Cruz, Candelaria).
Intense to torrential rains will be experienced over Cagayan and Apayao, while heavy to intense rains are forecast in Batanes, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Isabela and Abra.
Moderate to heavy rains will prevail across La Union, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet and Ifugao.
Flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards.
“There is a high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak surge heights exceeding 3 meters in the next 48 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) reported that Tuguegarao and Basco airports had six and two canceled flights, respectively, due to Marce.
All flights to and from Palanan were canceled, while there was no scheduled flight to Isabela via Cauayan Airport, the CAAP said.
PAGASA forecast the typhoon to make landfall and traverse Babuyan Islands and/or the northern portions of mainland Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Apayao, or pass very close to these areas from yesterday until today. Philippine News Agency
