Manila topples San Juan

MANILA Indios Bravos brought down two-time champion San Juan Predators, 11.5-9.5 in another king-size upset in the 2022 PCAP-GM Wesley So Cup chess team championships recently.

NM Rolando Andador shocked GM Victor Moskalenko, 1-0; GM Guillermo Vasquez of Paraguay bested IM Rolando Nolte, 2-1; seven-time national executive champion Dr. Jenny Mayor toppled IM Ricardo de Guzman, 2.5-.5; and GM-candidate Ronald Dableo overwhelmed FM Narquingden Reyes, 2-1, to power the Indios Bravos of Atty. Joey Elauria and Val Mendoza to another inspiring victory in the two-division, 24-team tournament sponsored by San Miguel Corportion, Ayala Land and PC Worx.

Homegrown bet Alji Cantos also won over FM Randy Segarra, 2-1, to complete Manila’s triumph.

WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and Narquingel Reyes carried the fight for the Predators as they won over Mira Mirtano (3-0) and CM Jhulo Glotan (2-1).

It was a different story in the second half of the doubleheder, with Manila losing to 2021 PCAP All-Filipino champion Laguna Heroes, 6-15, and San Juan winning over Isabela Knight of Alexander, 19-2.

PCAP, the country’s first and only pay-for-play chess league, is organized by Atty. Paul Elauria as President- Commissioner; and Michael Angelo Chua as Chairman.

The eventis sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra, and supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philppines (NCFP), led by Chairman Prospero “Butch” Pichay.

PCAP is being played every Wednesday and Saturday.
