Man drowns in river, search ops ongoing

POLICE search and rescue is still being done for a man who drowned while bathing in a river in Bgy. Calangay, San Nicolas, Batangas on Thursday.

Case officer PSMS Bembol Cortiguerra of San Nicolas Municipal Police Station (MPS) identified the fatality as Edel Nepomoceno, 27, a resident of Bgy. San Miguel, Sto. Tomas City, Batangas.

On September 23 at about 5 p.m., a cellphone call was received by San Nicolas MPS from a concerned citizen of this village informing the cops of a drowning incident at Pansipit River located at Bgy. Calangay in the said municipality.

Police led by PCMS Godofredo De Castro Jr. immediately proceeded to the place. It was disclosed that around 4:30 p.m. of the same day the victim with his companion went to Pansipit River for a swim.

According to the friend of the victim, Richard Maullion y Catapang, while the victim was swimming he was suddenly swept away by the strong current of water. Maullion sought help but the victim quickly disappeared from the water surface.

The local police have coordinated with the Philippine Coast Guard of San Nicolas town for a rescue/retrieval operation and but as of this writing, the body has yet to be retrieved.
