A MAGNITUDE 5.8 earthquake on Friday night shook waters off Calatagan in Batangas, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake, which was felt at 11:08 p.m. on Friday, was 15 kms. southeast of Calatagan town.
It was tectonic in origin and had depth of 113 kms.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
State seismologists initially reported a magnitude 5.7 earthquake before scaling it up.
According to Phivolcs, the tremor was an aftershock of the magnitude 6.6 quake that hit Calatagan last July 24.
“It is in the same area and depth as the July magnitude 6.6 earthquake. It is smaller in magnitude that is why it is called an aftershock of the July quake,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said.
Solidum added that the Calatagan earthquake was not related to volcanic activities in Taal.
