A CONGRESSMAN lauded Sunday President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr.‘s initiative to amend the Constitution’s restrictive economic provisions, highlighting the urgent need for such reforms.

AAMBIS-OWA Partylist Rep. Lex Anthony Cris A. Colada said these changes are crucial for facilitating foreign investments and fostering faster, more inclusive economic growth, which directly impacts the well-being of every Filipino.

“Kailangan natin ang mga pagbabagong ito ngayon, hindi sa susunond na Kongreso o administration. Dead on arrival palagi ang Charter reform advocacy ng House pagdating sa Senado sa loob ng mahigit na tatlong dekada simula nung 8th Congress. Ngayon, dahil sa full support ng Pangulong Marcos, buhay ang adbokasyang ito,” Colada said.

However, he said the Senate has to respond positively to the President’s statements by treating Charter reform with a deeper sense of urgency.

“Naiwanan na tayo ng mga kalapit na bansa, in terms attracting foreign investments and economic development. Kapag nagpa-petik-petik pa tayo, sa kangkungan uli tayo pupulutin,” Colada stressed.

He recalled that Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri has promised to finish adopting a resolution on economic amendment proposals in his chamber “this quarter, before our Holy Week break.”

Expressing gratitude for the President’s acknowledgment of their longstanding advocacy in the House of Representatives for these amendments, Colada affirmed their commitment to this cause, which dates back more than three decades since the 8th Congress.

Colada also clarified that their support solely focuses on economic matters, distancing themselves from advocating for political amendments.

President Marcos has pledged unwavering support for the ongoing efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution, underscoring the significance of these revisions for the nation’s future prosperity.

Addressing a diverse audience of lawmakers, government officials, and members of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa), President Marcos outlined his vision for a revitalized Philippines, equipped to tackle the challenges of the 21st century through essential constitutional reforms.

Highlighting the paramount importance of the country’s economic well-being, President Marcos underscored how certain constitutional provisions currently impede growth, foreign investment, and governmental efficiency.

He noted that while the Constitution has served the nation well for over three decades, some provisions now hinder economic potential and global competitiveness.

President Marcos emphasized the need for amendments to allow greater economic flexibility, particularly in opening up sectors restricted to foreign investors.

He acknowledged the plethora of measures filed in the House of Representatives since the 8th Congress, reflecting the widespread call for economic reforms.

The President stressed the importance of fostering a healthy and democratic debate on these amendments, engaging citizens, and informing their perspectives.

He pledged to respect the prerogatives of Congress and the Filipino people, allowing democratic institutions to take their natural course in the amendment process.
