Lady board member bats for free internet in Quezon

LUCENA CITY – Aimed at having a massive access to free internet in Quezon, a lady provincial board member authored a resolution requesting Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Sec. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan to provide free internet Wi-fi connectivity in the province.

In her privilege speech during Friday’s regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, 2nd district Bokal Maria Yllana “Yna” Liwanag-Asistio noted the creation of DICT pursuant to Republic Act 10844 shortly before the term of the late President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III ended in 2016.

Under the law, Liwanag-Asistio said the DICT shall be the primary policy, planning, coordinating, implementing and administrative entity of the Executive Branch of the government that will plan, develop and promote the national ICT development agenda.

The neophyte lady board member said that aligning with the current administration’s ICT Agenda, the DICT will prioritize the development of a National Broadband Plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless technologies to improve internet speed provision of Wi-Fi access at no charge in selected public places, including parks, plazas, public libraries, schools, government hospitals, train stations, airports and seaports.

Liwanag-Asistio noted the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sa panahong ito, kailangan natin maka-connect. Importante ang Wi-fi. Malaki ang maitutulong nito sa mga estudyante sa pagmo-module, ang seminar gagawing webinar para mas safe at ang session, pwedeng virtual para safe din. At puwede na ang mass gathering na zoom edition,” said Liwanag-Asistio in her speech which was unanimously seconded by all members of the board led by its presiding officer, Vice Gov. Samuel Nantes.
