LA SALLE bested fabled rival Ateneo to sweep the women’s and men’s division titles in the 1st Philippine Table Tennis Federation Huaching Inter-Collegiate Challenge Sunday at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay.

Angel Laude and Mitz Rein Redoquerio powered the Lady Green Paddlers to a 2-0 sweep of the Blue Eagles in the title round.

Laude made quick work of Jelaine Monteclaro, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7, while Redoquerio completed La Salle’s sweep with a 11-8, 11-7, 3-11, 11-7 conquest of Ann Gella Borbon.

The reigning UAAP queens defeated Far Eastern University, 2-0, in the semifinals.

The Green Paddlers found their Katipunan counterparts to tough nut to crack before pulling off a 2-0 Finals win.

Elijah Yamson survived Kong Cabrido’s tough first and third set stands before hacking out a 14-12, 11-5, 12-10 victory, while Red Morison Torres outlasted Andrew Uy in a five-set thriller, 12-14, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9, to secure La Salle’s victory.

University of Santo Tomas, the reigning three-time UAAP men’s champion, settled for third place after losing to Ateneo, 0-2, in the semifinals.

The Blue Eagles pulled off the biggest shocker in the tournament after Cabrido stunned Cambodia Southeast Asian Games campaigner Eljey Dan Tormis, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10. Uy downed John Michael Castro, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.

The tournament is supported by Huaching Foundation of philanthropist Bill Yap, Philippine Olympic Committee, Gold Cross Security and Investigation Agency, Cara Celine Dormtel, Coca-Cola Bottlers, and Dino Jalandoni.
