THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced the arrest of a Korean fugitive who attempted to flee the country by passing himself as a Filipino.

Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco, 26-yar-old Na Ikhyeon was intercepted at the Clark International Airport in Angeles City, Pampanga last May 31 before he could board a Cebu Pacific Airways flight to Hongkong.

Tansingco said the Korean assumed the name of a certain Rodingo Santos Chun in a spurious Philippine passport that he presented to the BI officer at the airport’s immigration departure counter.

The immigration officer reportedly noticed glaring irregularities in the appearance of the passport’s biopage, which could not be read when scanned by the computer.

The passenger was also unable to speak Pilipino or any local dialect, which prompted the officer to refer the passenger for secondary inspection.

Examination conducted by the BI’s forensic documents laboratory on the passport revealed the passport is counterfeit.

During questioning by members of the BI’s border control and intelligence unit (BCIU), the passenger surrendered his South Korean passport which turned out be in the Interpol’s hit list of invalidated travel documents.

The Interpol’s national central bureau in Manila disclosed that Na is wanted in Korea on two counts of fraud cases which involved large sums of money that he allegedly received from his victims.

Tansingco said the BI board of commissioners will issue a summary deportation order against Na so he could be sent back to Korea to stand trial for his crimes.

Na is presently detained at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending deportation proceedings.
