Judy Ann feels different now as one of the producers of her MMFF entry
“THIS is an extraordinary team,” shares actress-producer Judy Ann Santos, who is honored to work alongside such talented actors in her Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2024 entry, the horror-thriller, Espantaho.
“Having someone like director Chito Roño at the helm makes this project even more special,” added Juday. “It’s a privilege to be part of a film that brings together this level of artistry.”
Judy Ann is not only the lead actress in director Chito’s much-anticipated horror film, Espantaho (Scare Crow), but also one of its co-producers, alongside lawyer Joji Alonso of Quantum Films and Cineko Productions.
This dual role has opened new doors for the award-winning actress, giving her a deeper appreciation for the complexities of filmmaking.
As the movie gears for its release as part of the 50th anniversary of the MMFF, Judy Ann is excited about both its creative potential and its box-office prospects.
“As a co-producer of this film, of course, I want it to be a box-office success,” quips, Judy Ann, revealing her mix of optimism and humility.
“Very, very light lang naman.”
The star-studded cast of Espantaho adds to the film’s allure. Joining Judy Ann are some of the most respected names in Philippine cinema, including Lorna Tolentino, Janice de Belen, Chanda Romero, Mon Confiado, Tommy Abuel, JC Santos and the ever-versatile Eugene Domingo.
The movie shows anew the expertise of the legendary Chito Roño in the horror genre, who has earned accolades in the industry for being known to deliver the gruesome and the macabre. The story was written by Chris Martinez.
The project also marks a milestone for Purple Bunny Productions, the production company Judy Ann and her husband Ryan Agoncillo established. Named after their youngest daughter Luna, Purple Bunny Productions started as a platform for Judy Ann’s Kitchen and has now expanded into the realm of film production.
“Because we have a company for each of our kids – Pink Pudding for Johan, Blue Buching for Lucho and Purple Bunny for Luna – this venture is deeply personal for us,” the actress explains.
While Espantaho is not Judy Ann’s first foray into producing – she previously co-produced the acclaimed Ploning (2008) – she admits that her approach this time feels different.
“Back then, I only got involved because we needed to release the trailer and I didn’t fully understand the process,” Judy Ann explains. “I wasn’t ready. But now, it just feels right to explore this.”
Her partnership with lawyer Joji Alonso has also been instrumental in shaping this new chapter of her career. “I think co-producing with Atty. Joji was one of the best decisions I made, apart from accepting this film,” admits Judy Ann.
“She’s an incredibly honest producer, so generous and giving with her knowledge.” Judy Ann credits the lawyer for teaching her the balance of strength and empathy needed to navigate the film industry.
“You need to have a strong heart but also show care for your team,” Judy Ann says. “She’s so hands-on – always on set, bringing food, visiting the artists’ tents, chatting with everyone.
“It’s rare to see a producer this present. As an actor, you feel appreciated because you know your producer is listening to you and addressing concerns directly.”
The collaborative and supportive environment created by the cast and crew turned the set of Espantaho into more than just a workplace – it became a family.
Judy Ann reflects, “It was such a great experience. There’s no pretense – it’s genuine care and collaboration. That’s rare and it’s what made this journey unforgettable.”
As the MMFF 2024 draws near starting December 25, Judy Ann is both excited and hopeful about how audiences will receive Espantaho, with a powerhouse cast, a masterful director and a dedicated production team.
Judy Ann feels confident that this film is something special. “Whether or not it becomes a box-office hit, the experience of creating Espantaho has been meaningful for me. It’s been a journey of learning, growth and discovery and I couldn’t be more grateful for it.”
Others in the stellar cast are Lorna Tolentino, Janice de Belen, Eugene Domingo, JC Santos, Tommy Abuel, Mon Confiado and Nico Antonio.
