JOSE Rizal University’s Emie Soriano Fernandez became the first double gold winner in NCAA taekwondo by ruling the finweight division of the women’s speed kicking competition yesterday.

It was a fitting advance birthday gift for Fernandez, who will turn 17 on Sunday, as the Pasig City native tallied 7.008 points to beat Arellano University’s Catherine Joy Vicente, whose 6.633 earned her a silver.

San Beda’s Nicole Anne Calasara took the bronze with 6.608.

Fernandez also won the women’s poomsae standard event two weeks ago.

Arellano’s Mikee Medina and San Sebastian’s Keith Laura Baladya were tied in fourth place with identical 6.542 points.

Other participants were College of Saint Benilde’s Joselle Daguinod (6.400), San Beda’s Claire Ysshabelle Blanco (6.175), Letran’s

Jacey Rain Bartolome (6.125) and Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Chelsea Marie Bañez (5.983).

The women’s tournament will last until Monday.
