THIRD pick Istulen Ola scored big by winning the 2024 Philracom Commissioner Dante Lantin Cup last Sunday at the Metroturf in Malvar, Batangas.

Known for his speed out of the gate, the Melaine Habla-owned and bred bay four-year-old by Brigand out of Close Haul took the early lead ahead of top choice Boss Emong and never looked back taking the win in wire-to-wire fashion.

It was clear that with half-mile to go Philippine Sportswriters Association Jockey of the Year John Alvin Guce had his mount under control and dictated the pace of the race with Boss Emong trying to play catch up.

At the final quarter, Boss Emong was able to level up with the leader but the Ruben Tupas-trained galloper had plenty to spare at this juncture and went on to win by two lengths stopping the clock at 1:39 (26′-23′-22′-26′) for the 1600-meter distance.

The victory was worth a cool P1,080,000 to the winning connections while Boss Emong took home P405,000 for the second place effort. War Cannon, a very close third placer pocketed P225,000 and Don Julio, coming in fourth, earned P90,000.

In Division II of the 2024 Philracom Commissioners’ Cup, Tisha Sevilla’s Jungkook earned P420,000 by stealing the thunder from Jaguar in a very calculated race riden by Mark Angelo Alvarez.

The Low Profile out of Liquid Oxygen progeny bred by Esguerra farm & Stud Inc. showed his last quarter drive to register a time of 1:39.4 in the mile race ahead of Jaguar, Sophisticated, Palauig and Easy Does It, in that order.

In last Saturday’s Philracom Commissioners’ Cup Division III, Vice-Governor Leonardo “Sandy” Javier Jr.’s Moderne Cong (Art Moderne-Boogie To Seattle) grabbed the spotlight in a full gate race to win over Diversity, Uncle Vhines, Mimbalot Falls and King Tiger.

By crossing the wire first, Moderne Cong added P300-thousand to his earnings while P100-thousand, P50,000, P25,000 and P15,000 went to the second to fifth place finishers.

In his speech, race honoree Commissioner Dante M. Lantin thanked the Commission for this honor and hopes that with the support of the racing public, the industry will continue to flourish and reach greater heights.

Philracom Chairman Reli de Leon for his part said, “Congratulations to the winning connections of our three big events. Thank you also to Commissioner Dante Lantin for his invaluable performance and contributions to the Commission. Rest assured that we, as Commissioner Lantin said, will continue to do our best to further the development and improvement of the industry.”

De Leon added that the momentum is already there and with the help of the bayang karerista the industry will achieve higher levels, not only in the competition, but the prize money for owners, trainers, jockeys, grooms and all those involved in the industry.
