Iloilo, Davao keep 1-2 positions in PCAP

ILOILO Kisela Knights and Davao Eagles pulled off similar convincing victories over their respective opponents to keep their 1-2 positions in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference.

Iloilo humbled Zamboanga Sultans, 13.5-7.5, and Tacloban Vikings, 17.5-3.5, to close out the first round of eliminations with 10 wins and one loss in the 24-team, two-group tournament sponsored by San Miguel Corporation and Ayala Land.

GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. led Iloilo’s charge as he defeated FM Edsar Valencia of Zamboanga, 2-1, and Eladio Lim III of Tacloban, 3-0.

Karl Viktor Ochoa outplayed NM Raymond Salcedo and NM Dale Bernardo and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia downed Sarah Mae Chua for Iloilo’s other victories.

Davao outsteadied PCAP 2021 All-Filipino runner-up Camarines Eagles,12.5-8.5, and Toledo Trojans, 11.5-9,5, to keep second place with a 9-2 win-loss record.

AGM Rowelyn Joy Acedo emerged as Davao’s top scorer as she won over Ezraline Alvarez of Camarines, 3-0, and Jinky Catulay of Toledo, 3-0, on the female board.

The other scorers for Davao were FM Roel Abelgas, FM Sander Severino, NM Alex Lupian and NM Jonathan Tan.

Negros Kingsmen clobbered Tacloban Viking, 19-2, and Palawan Queen’s Gambits, 15-6, for a third-best 8-3 win-loss record.

Sharing fourth to fifth places are Surigao Finachetto Checkmates and Zamboanga Sultans with 7-4 slates.

Surigao beat Palawan, 17-4, and Iriga Oragons, 13-8, while Zamboanga bested Cebu City Machers, 14-7, after losing to Iloilo,7-5-13.5.

Over at the Northern Division, Pasig Pirates and San Juan Predators continued their remarkable showing to finish ahead of the field.

Pasig, bannered by GMs Mark Paragua and Darwin Laylo, overwhelmed Olongapo Rainbow, 20-1, and Manila Indios Bravos, 14-7, to clinch top spot in the Northern Division with a 10-1 win-loss record and 162.5 total points.

Sherily Cua, Rudy Ibanez, Jerome Villanueva, Eric Laaog and IM Cris Ramayrat also stepped up for the Pirates, who are hoping to win their first-ever PCAP title under the guidance of Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto.

San Juan, led by IM Rolando Nolte and WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda, edged defending champion Laguna Heroes, 11.5-9.5, and Cavite Spartans, 15.5-5.5, to match Pasig’s 10-1 record.

The Predators, however, remain in second place with 150.5 total points.

Nolte carried the fight for San Juan when he upset GM rogelio Barcenilla, Jr. of Laguna, 2.5-.5.

Nolte, who took the place of GM Oliver Barbosa at board one, defeated Barcenilla.
