LAOAG CITY – Ilocos Norte cyclists are back on the road Saturday to raise funds to help send indigent children to school.

The 35-kilometer “Padyakan sa Paoay” bike for a cause started at Paoay Church, traversed Suba Road to Baay-Nangguyudan Road, passed Paoay Lake, and back to the starting line.

The registration fee was P250 which came with the event shirt and snacks. The participants at least 12 years old were required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The event is not just for exercise and enjoying the province’s natural landscapes. Through our registration fees, we will be able to provide for the needs of our school children and inspire them to become good citizens,” Master Sgt. Noel Abad, the event organizer, said.

Maj. Sheryll Guzman, Paoay acting police chief, said proceeds of the event will help fund the community outreach programs of the Philippine National Police (PNP), like livelihood assistance to the needy and school supplies.

Since the easing of coronavirus-related travel protocols, more bikers are seen on the road here.

Bike trails have been spruced up in Ilocos Norte in the past months, prompting officials to promote the scenic trails as part of the tourism map.

So far, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has validated at least 12 bike routes that are among the nature trails in the province – Kamadmadrian trail in Currimao, Catuguing trail in San Nicolas, Nabu trail in Batac City, Lagui downhill track in Laoag, Solsona-Apayao Road, Badoc Virgen Milagrosa route, Sapat downhill track in Pasuquin, Payak trail in Pasuquin-Burgos-Bangui, Stingray trail in Pagudpud, Salsalamagui trail in Vintar, Karingking Serrek trails in Solsona, and Paoay Lake bike route.
