Hunger and poverty

WITH the economy still trying to recover from the two-year coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the government finds it hard to shore up its revenue collections.

Thus, we commend the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for assuring the public that only deserving people receive government assistance.

In fact, new DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, a former congressman and a three-term city mayor, vowed to prioritize the cleansing of the list of the beneficiaries database.

It is certainly disheartening to note that there are reports of alleged inclusion of individuals, who are not qualified, in the list of beneficiaries of DSWD assistance programs.

In a press briefing last Friday, Secretary Gatchalian vowed that only qualified and deserving families and individuals will benefit from these government aid programs.

As part of government efforts to address the pestering hunger and poverty problems across the country, Gatchalian wants to identify who really are in dire need of DSWD assistance.

He specifically cited the implementation of the highly-successful Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Gatchalian said that the main thrust of his administration is geared on the country’s campaign to eradicate hunger and poverty in this developing Southeast Asian nation.

“Talagang ang daming report na may beneficiaries na hindi naman mahirap at ang dami ring mahihirap ang hindi nakakatanggap ng ayuda mula sa gobyerno,” an elderly lamented.

Hopefully, the Filipino people, from the powerful to the lowly, will support the DSWD’s programs and initiatives to meet the needs of the poor and victims of natural disasters.
