Amid calls for stepping down

HOUSE Majority Leader and Zamboanga City Representative Manuel Jose “Mannix” M. Dalipe has branded as “baseless” and “unfounded” calls for Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla to resign.

This was stressed by Dalipe after Remulla’s son was arrested by authorities in connection with the shipment intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) allegedly containing “marijuana”.

“This call for SOJ [Secretary of Justice] Remulla’s resignation is premature and unnecessary. It will only muddle the case of his son, who is already a consenting adult,” Dalipe said.

“The SOJ holds a position of trust, and as long as the president trusts him and sees him as an effective member of the Cabinet, I see no reason for him to resign,” Dalipe added.

On Thursday, top officials of the National Unity Party (NUP), namely Ronaldo V. Puno, NUP Chairman, and Camarines Sur 2nd District Rep. LRay Villafuerte, NUP president, strongly backed Remulla, stressing his “professionalism and love of country is unparalleled.”

“The NUP continues to express its support for Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, vice chairman of the Party, during this difficult period,” Puno and Villafuerte said.

“We have known Secretary Remulla for years. His professionalism and love of country is unparalleled,” they said.

Puno and Villafuerte commended Remulla “for promptly assuring authorities that he will not, in any way, interfere in or influence the case of his son.”

“We are assured of the fact that as a patriotic citizen and head of the Department of Justice, he will always place the national interest above his personal ties,” the NUP statement read.

“As a principled man, we know that Secretary Remulla will always uphold the rule of law. We know that he will let justice take its course,” the statement added.
