SELF-CONFESSED gunman Joel Escorial and five other suspects charged in the killing of broadcaster Percy Lapid have pleaded not guilty during their arraignment before the Las Piñas City Regional Trial Court, according to Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento over the weekend.

Escorial had previously admitted to being the gunman but his not guilty plea was described by Malcontento as “procedural.” with no further explanation given.

In addition to Escorial, inmates Denver Mayores, Alvin Labra, Aldrin Galicia, Alfie Peñaredonda, and Christopher Bacoto also pleaded not guilty.

Former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gerald Bantag, former deputy security officer Ricardo Zulueta, Israel Adao Dimaculangan, Edmon Adao Dimaculangan, and an individual using the alias “Orly/Orlando” have yet to be arraigned as they remain at-large.

Escorial claimed that the order to kill Lapid came from inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).

No bail was recommended for their temporary liberty.

Lapid, also known as Percival Mabasa, was a DWBL radio commentator who was shot dead on October 3 while returning home.

He hosted a radio commentary show called “Lapid Fire,” in which he criticized fake news, red-tagging, and government corruption.
