Grandma dies, 17 hurt as van with COVID patients turned turtle in Aklan
AN elderly woman died while 17 others, including three COVID-positive passengers, were injured when a passenger van figured in a road accident in Aklan.
Police said the fatality was a 63-year-old woman.
The injured were rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Three of the wounded passengers tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus disease-19.
The accident occurred when the van overtook a tricycle in Ibajay, Aklan.
The van driver failed to notice a pick-up truck parked on the roadside and hit the truck.
“Iniwasan niya ‘po ‘yung nakaparadang pickup truck, tapos ‘pag biglang kabig niya po pakaliwa, biglang tumama po ‘yung puwetan ng van doon sa nakaparadang pickup truck, tapos ‘yun na po ‘yung naging sanhi ng kanya pong hindi nakontrol at nagpaikot-ikot po ng ilang beses ang van,” a prober said.
.A child, who was among the injured passengers, is still in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
The other passengers were ordered isolated after the three fellow passengers were found to be infected with COVID.
Police are pursuing van driver Feljun Caberoy who fled after the incident.
