RESULTS of a survey showing most voters favor anti-corruption candidates makes the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte crucial in ensuring public officials are accountable.

Deputy Majority Leader La Union Representative Paolo Ortega V stressed that corruption is not just a political issue but a direct attack on the welfare of Filipinos, depriving them of much-needed government services.

“Every peso lost to corruption is a peso stolen from public service. It means fewer hospitals, fewer classrooms and fewer opportunities for the people who need them the most. The fight against corruption is a fight for the future of our nation,” Ortega said.

The Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, conducted from February 15 to 19 and commissioned by the Stratbase Group, revealed that 70 percent of Filipinos prioritize anti-corruption efforts in selecting their leaders, proving that integrity and accountability are crucial in the upcoming elections.

Ortega underscored that the impeachment of Duterte will serve as a test of the government’s commitment to transparency and good governance, particularly amid allegations surrounding her use of confidential funds.

“We cannot allow corruption to continue unchecked. If we turn a blind eye now, we are essentially telling Filipinos that integrity does not matter in leadership. And that is a dangerous precedent to set,” he added.

He also called out the Senate’s delay in proceeding with the impeachment trial, saying that it raises questions about political maneuvering and double standards in delivering justice.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. Kung gusto, may paraan. Kung ayaw, maraming dahilan. The Senate must show its commitment to due process and the rule of law by allowing the impeachment trial to proceed without delay,” Ortega said.

As the 2025 elections approach, he urged voters to take an active role in eliminating corruption by ensuring that dishonest and abusive leaders are removed from office.
