Good news

THE good news is that the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and 88 other senior officers tested negative for illegal drugs in a surprise on-the-spot drug test.

Reports said the mandatory drug test was conducted after last Friday’s conference of top police officers, led by PNP chief Gen. Benjamin C. Acorda Jr., at Camp Crame.

The command conference was attended by officials from the PNP Command Group, Directorial Staff, regional directors and National Support Unit directors.

Acorda said “the surprise drug test underscores the PNP’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct among its members.”

Not only that. The mandatory drug test is ample proof that the police agency is resolute in its efforts to address the drug menace and ensure the integrity of the PNP leadership.

Since the beginning of the year, nearly 116,000 police officers and men have undergone random drug testing as part of government efforts to ensure a drug-free police agency.

And it is certainly heartening to know that only 25 police personnel, or less than 0.02 percent, tested positive for habit-forming substances, according to reports.

We are made to believe that drug testing does not only determine the fitness of police commanders but also demonstrate the PNP’s commitment to integrity enhancement.

It is high time to step up the pressure on everybody to intensify the nationwide campaign against illegal drugs, particularly shabu, marijuana and cocaine.
