PUERTO PRINCESA City, Palawan — Malabon and Pasig City swimmers made waves at the swimming competition of the 2024 Batang Pinoy National Championships held at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex pool.

Arvin Naeem Taguinota II secured five gold medals while Sophia Rose Garra of Malabon City shone birghtest with four gold medals in their respective events in the 13-under boys and girls divisions, respectivly.

Garra dominated the girls’ category, earning her golds in the 200-meter individual medley, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter freestyle, and 200-meter backstroke.

Taguinota, a 13-year-old from Pasig City, also frolicked in the boys’ division, winning golds in the 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter backstroke and team-relay.

Taguinota clinched his fifth gold medal by winning the boys 12-13 100m backstroke (1:04.30) and contributing to Pasig’s victory in the boys 12-13 4x50m freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.44.

He also teamed up with Ricardo Delgado, Marcelino Picandal III, and Jefferson Saburlase on the fourth day of the competition.

Meanwhile, Albert Jose Amaro II made a name for himself by capturing three gold medals and breaking two of his previous records in the Boys 16-17 division.

The 17-year-old swimmer from Naga City set new benchmarks in the 100-meter freestyle, clocking 52.29 seconds to surpass his previous record of 53.29 seconds, and in the 50-meter freestyle, improving from 24.53 seconds to 24.32 seconds.

Amaro clocked 52.29 seconds in the 100m freestyle, surpassing his previous record of 53.29 seconds, and improved his time in the 50m freestyle to 24.32 seconds from his former record of 24.53 seconds.

Other record-setters included Taguinota II of Pasig City in the Boys 12-13 200m IM (2:22.02), Ashton Clyde Jose of Taguig City in the Boys 14-15 200m IM (2:14.08), Anton Paulo Dominick Della of San Fernando City, La Union in the Boys 16-17 200m IM (2:15.58), and Jaime Ulandorr Maniago of Quezon City in the boys 16-17 breaststroke (1:06.78).

Catherine Cruz of Mabalacat City also broke the record in the girls 16-17 200m breaststroke (2:28.71), along with Juan Alessandro Suarez of Davao City in the boys 16-17 200m breaststroke (2:25.72), and Sealtiel Cherrie Daiz II of Makati City in the girls 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:47.39 minutes.

In wushu, Rachel Joy Cheung of Bacoor City secured the gold medal in the female Jianshu category with a score of 8.13 points. Lynda Gail Porras of Davao City (7.72) and Rizal’s Elizabeth Ibardaloza (7.30) claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

Charlyz Faith Agudo of Baguio City triumphed in the female Nanquan category with a score of 7.84. Rizal’s Maharlika Ibardaloza (7.42) and Louise Gabrielle, also from Baguio City (7.20), took the silver and bronze.
