THE Phliippines added one more gold, three more silver and two more bronze medals in the 20th ASEAN University Games in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand recently.

Alyssa Hannah Go and Kharl Julianne Sha captured the gold in the women’s lightweight double scull 1000m event in rowing to bring to five the total gold medal collection of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines-supported Filipino delegation.

Also taking home the silver medals are Christian Joseph Jasmin in 1000m lightweight single scull and Joachim De Jesus and Emmanuel Joseph Obana in 1000m lightweight double scull, both in rowing; and Al Quiza and Isagani Manuel of Mapua University in the men’s team competition in tennis.

Quiza, a 22-year-old Business Management student at Mapua, took the bronze medal in men’s singles.

Quiza later teamed up with Isagani Manuel III for the men’s double bronze.

Earlier, the National University- represented Philippine team lost to host Thailand and settled for the silver medal in men’s volleyball.

Swimmer Chloe Isleta of De la Salle shone brightest for the lean but mean Filipino delegation during the week-long competition by winning four gold medals — two of them in record AUG times — and one bronze medal.

Isleta, widely considered as the new “Poster Girl”of Philippine swimming, emerged as the winningest participant in the event dominated by host Thailand.

The 24-year-old Isleta, who is best remembered for ending the Philippines’ 29-year gold medal drought in women’s swimming during the 31st Southeast Asian Games, captured the gold medals in 50m,100m, and 200m backstroke, as well as the 200m individual medley.

The San Jose, California native also established new AUG records in ruling both the women’s 100m and 200m backstroke events

The United States-trained swimmer, who is set to represent De La Salle in the coming UAAP season, also bagged the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle.

In karate, Roy Vergara of Technological University of the Philippines took the bronze medal in the men’s kumite 55kg and below.

In basketball, the TUP-represented Filipinos under head coach Arlene Rodriguez finished fourth overall with a 1-3 win-loss record.

FESSAP Membership Committee head Dr. Robert Calo lauded the Filipinos’ five golds, four silvers and four bronzes in the biennial competition exclusively for top student-athletes of Southeast Asian countries.

The 5-4-4 gold-silver-bronze medal harvest of the Filipinos was a lot better than the one-gold finish of the country during the 2018 edition held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.

The NU men’s volleyball team brought home the lone gold in 2018.

No AUG was held in 2020 due to the pandemic.
