IN celebration of International Day of Lifelong Learning, Quezon City Fifth District Representative PM Vargas has reaffirmed his commitment to equip Filipinos with skills and competencies necessary in an era of non-stop technological evolution.
“Empowering Filipinos through continuous education will enable them to adapt, innovate, and excel in the evolving global landscape,” cites Vargas as he files for several legislation for life-long learning and skills development suitable for all age brackets namely the school-age group, the young adults, and the senior citizens.
Among his key proposals are:
1. House Bill 1633 or Financial Literacy for Workers Act aims to equip workers with essential financial knowledge to make informed decisions and enhance their economic stability
2. House Bill 1634 or Financial and Retirement Literacy for Midlife and Older Filipinos focuses on enhancing the financial security of midlife and older individuals through targeted literacy programs
3. House Bill 8831 or Digital Literacy in Basic Education Curriculum seeks to integrate digital literacy into the basic education curriculum to prepare students for success in a technology-driven environment
4. House Bill 7168 or Free Education for Senior Citizens proposes education programs for senior citizens, enabling them to pursue personal growth
Vargas, who is an active member of the House Committees on Youth and Sports Development and Senior Citizens, highlights that the holistic approach of the measures aims to enhance societal well-being and work-force readiness. “Education is not confined to the walls of a classroom; it is a lifelong journey of acquiring knowledge, skills, and values that enable individuals to thrive in a dynamic and diverse world,” he adds.
While the proposed measures are still under committee review in the 19th Congress, Vargas remains optimistic on the potential impact of these proposals. He also recognizes the foundation laid by his older brother, former QC Fifth District Representative and current Councilor Alfred Vargas, who introduced initial versions of some of the measures during his term.
The International Day of Lifelong Learning is observed annually on January 24 to celebrate all forms of education and recognize its transformative power in building a better future.
