A Florida bicyclist lost control of his bike and fell on top of a female alligator.

Bicycle accidents happen all the time. Bicycle accidents that involve alligators, however, are rare. A 74-year-old Florida man, unfortunately, experienced the horror of falling off of his bike directly onto an alligator.

Robert Bassett of Palm City, Florida reportedly lost control of his bike and fell about six feet down a park embankment and landed “on” a female alligator protecting her nest.

According to Field and Stream, Bassett was bitten but was able to crawl away with the assistance of a passerby. He was airlifted to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute after escaping and is reportedly in stable condition, with non-life-threatening injuries to his leg and torso.

One of Bassett’s friends and bike shop owner explained that Bassett rides the trails of the park where the incident occurred almost daily.

As for the alligator, it was relocated to a farm by local trapper John Davidson where she will be used for breeding purposes. He told Newsweek the alligator was most likely in the area because she had a nest nearby.

“You got to be careful when you’re around the water, especially this time of year,” Davidson explained. “The females are sitting on nests and are particularly aggressive.”

There Are Over 1 Million Alligators In Florida

Literally landing on top of an alligator if you take a tumble off of your bike would be the last thing on any cyclist’s mind, but living in Florida where 1.25 million alligators call home, the chances of landing on one are very clearly greater than zero.
