A significant milestone in Cebu’s history occurred with the opening of the first-ever National Museum in the province today, August 1, 2023.

The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) located in Cebu City will officially welcome visitors on Tuesday after a grand inauguration ceremony led by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. July 28.

“I encourage my fellow servants in government to support the initiatives of the NMP. Let us persuade local and foreign visitors alike to include the NMP Cebu in their itinerary whenever they visit our beautiful country and this vibrant, ancient province.

Let us also ensure that our cultural institutions and establishments are accessible to Filipinos from all walks of life,” said the president.

The NMP in Cebu City will be accessible to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, operating from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as reported by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

Architect Willian Parsons, who reportedly designed and constructed the Customs (Aduana) Building at Plaza Independencia in Cebu City back in 1910, has played a pivotal role in the museum’s establishment.

In 2004, the building was transformed into Malacañang in Sugbo, aiming to bring the national government closer to the Visayas region. However, it was later affected by a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake in 2013, resulting in its temporary closure.

After years of careful planning and deliberation, the conversion of the Aduana Building to the National Museum-Central Visayas Regional Museum was eventually approved in 2019.

“I encourage my fellow servants in government to support the initiatives of the NMP. Let us persuade local and foreign visitors alike to include the NMP Cebu in their itinerary whenever they visit our beautiful country and this vibrant, ancient province.

Let us also ensure that our cultural institutions and establishments are accessible to Filipinos from all walks of life,” ani Marcos.
