Fireworks monitoring

VARIOUS quarters, including ordinary citizens across the country, expect fewer fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) this year.

In fact, the Department of Health (DOH) has not released any data on FWRIs “apparently because of fewer injuries reported so far.”

Of course, this is “good news” to parens, guardians, barangay officials and hospital authorities not only in the metropolis but elsewhere.

“Madalas kasi ay mga bata ang nabibiktima ng mga paputok at depektibong pyrotechnic devices,” said a lady barangay health worker.

Noong mga nakaraang taon ay Nobyembre pa lang ay may mga isinusugod na sa ospital dahil naputukan sila ng rebentador,” she added.

Last year, a total of 609 individuals were hurt due to firecrackers, which is almost double the 307 cases logged from Dec. 21, 2022 to Jan. 5, 2023.

Records show that most of the FWRIs occurred in Metropolitan Manila. Northern Luzon, Calabarzon and Central Luzon came in second, third and fourth, respectively.

And 96 percent of the FWRIs happened at home and in the streets.

We commend concerned government offices and agencies for intensifying their efforts to ensure a safe and healthful celebration of New Year.

It’s a move in the right direction.
