Fire destroys COVID vaccines in Ilocos Norte

A FIRE that struck a health office on Friday night destroyed over 400 doses of COVID-19 and pediatric vaccines in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire started at the storage room for medical supplies on the second floor of the San Nicolas Health Office at 7:11 p.m. last Friday.

The blaze immediately engulfed the entire building and destroyed the storage room that contained the vaccine chiller and refrigerator.

Among those destroyed by the blaze were AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines.

The fire was immediately put under control at 7:39 p.m. on the same day.

“Yung isang medical refrigerator na nasa storage room, nag-malfunction ang compressor na posibleng pinagmulan ng sunog,” BFP-San Nicolas Fire Marshall Insp. Reynold Aguinaldo, said.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

As of September 10, Ilocos Norte has recorded a total of 16,583 COVID-19 cases, with 2,064 active cases, 14,278 recoveries, and 241 deaths.
