PERVASIVE and deep-rooted in impoverished Philippines, corruption still worries government authorities and the people.

But it is heartening to note that the Marcos’ administration is doing everything to address the problem.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said the administration’s bid for digital transformation is crucial in eradicating corruption.

Bersamin, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, said the administration is undertaking initiative reforms, including the digitalization of public transactions, to fight corruption.

He made the statement as Malacanang welcomed the slight improvement of the country’s standing in the 2023 global corruption index.

The Philippines ranked 115th among 180 countries in the 2023 corruption perception index of Transparency International, improving from its 116th ranking in 2022.

“We consider the result as both a challenge to do better and as a reason for hope that the country is headed in the right direction,” said Bersamin.

Earnest efforts are already being undertaken to implement the digital transformation mandate of the Marcos administration.

Bersamin said this is being done to streamline institutional processes to curtail opportunities for graft an corruption in government.

And the former SC chief justice said the digitalization efforts are in line with President Marcos’ call for the government to show in deeds, not in words, that it is deserving of the people’s trust.

Certainly, the government will have the support of the Filipino people in a serious nationwide anti-corruption campaign.
