PAGADIAN, Zamboanga del Sur — Roxas unleashed a monumental fightback, stunning Globalport-MisOr, 90-87, in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup at the Pagadian City Gymnasium here Tuesday.

The Vanguards, which won its third consecutive game, improved to 4-2 alongside Zamboanga Sibugay and Kapatagan for a triple tie atop the leaderboard.

A jumper by Andoy Estrella to start the payoff period gave the Valientes their biggest lead of the game at 23 with 9:27 remaining, 78-55.

Then it was all Roxas from thereon.

The Vanguards uncorked a 27-6 blast, capped by James Martinez’s fastbreak layup, to close the gap to just two, 82-84, with 1:57 to go.

After a series of empty possessions, MisOr’s Reil Cervantes found himself open underneath off a broken play to extend their lead to four, 86-82, with 40.6 ticks left.

But Roxas’ Kentoy Segura retaliated with a top-of-the-key trey off the inbound to inch within one with just three seconds chopped off the clock.

In the ensuing play, Cervantes was fouled and sent to the line where he split his charities with 25 seconds left, 87-85.

On the other end, Vanguard Marlon Monte failed to find a teammate on the inbound to give the Valientes the possession.

But the pressing defense of Roxas came to play as Jaymar Gimpayan stole Joseph Nalos’ pass and dished it out to Segura, who calmly drained a triple from the left wing to give his side the lead for good, 88-87.

With a chance to regain the lead for MisOr, Joel Lee Yu penetrated the basket but his kick-out pass was intercepted by Cyrus Tabi resulting in Monte’s freebies on the other end.

Monte missed both his shots from the stripe but Gimpayan was there for the stickback as Lee Yu missed his three-pointer to give the Vanguards the emotional win.

“Sabi ko sa players stick sa system. Kung ano ‘yung pinractice namin na trap puro ganon lang,” said Roxas head coach Alvin Grey.

Meanwhile, Iligan arrested its four-game funk at the expense of the skidding Basilan BRT, 72-65.

Down by as much as 12, a three-pointer by Med Salim brought the Peace Riders to within one, 60-61, with 8:10 remaining in the game.

But Archangels Jack Hoyohoy and Kris Daguisonan combined for six straight points which were answered by five quick points by Kim Sallidin and Jorem Morada to keep within striking distance, 65-67, with 2:14 left.

However, that would be the last time Basilan would see the ball fall in its basket as Hoyohoy and Lester Tamayo put the finishing touches for Iligan
