FEU survives Letran in AsiaBasket

UAAP team Far Eastern University rode on the 1-2 punch of Cholo Villanueva and Xyrus Torres to roll baxk NCAA champion Letran, 84-74, and complete a sweep of Group B in the 2023 Bola.TV AsiaBasket Las Piñas Championship at the Villar Coliseum.

Anonuevo finished with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block, while Torres added 13 points for FEU, which will face College of St. Benilde in the quarterfinals.

James Tempra and Royce Alforque added 12 points each and Patrick Sleat contributed 10 points for the Tamaraws.

Mouhammad Fatty grabbed 18 rebounds, 11 off the offensive end, while adding nine points, three blocks, and two steals.

Kurt Reyson had a near triple-double for Letran with 20 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

Kevin Santos added a double-double for Letran with 19 points and 15 rebounds alongside three assists and three blocks.

With the loss, Letran fell to No. 3 and will play Group A’s second seed Corsa Tires in another quarterfinal.

Actually, the Tamaraws and Knights fought evenly in the early goings.

But the Tamaraws unleashed a 13-3 run in the final 2:20 of the third period to take a commanding 66-54 lead.

The Knights never recovered from there.

The other quarterfinal games pit Uratex against Sanzar and San Beda against Group A topnotcher Ateneo.
