A JOBLESS man, wearing an athletic police uniform, was arrested after allegedly trying to extort money from a taxi driver after introducing himself as a police officer Sunday evening in Makati City.

Makati police chief P/Col. Edward Cutiyog said elements of Ayala Police Sub-Station seized from the suspect, 20, of Trece Martires City, Cavite, a PNP athletic uniform he was wearing, a police field cap, and a handcuff after he was arrested at around 8:20 p.m. (April 9) at the corner of East St. and Ayala Avenue.

In his report to Southern Police District (SPD) Director P/Brigadier Gen. Kirby John Kraft, a taxi driver sought the assistance of Dean Mark Ayes, 43, the duty security guard of Bgy. San Lorenzo, after his passenger, who identified himself as a policeman, asked him for money instead of paying his meter fare.

The duty guard accompanied the victim to his driven cab, but the suspect had already alighted and saw him walking along Ayala Avenue.

Upon reaching the corner of East St., they accosted the suspect and asked for his PNP (Philippine National Police) identification card.

When the suspect failed to present his PNP ID, the guard brought him to Ayala Police Sub-Station before he was referred to Investigation and Detective Management Section (IDMS) for proper investigation and disposition.

Kraft said charges for violation of Article 177 or Usurpation of Authority and Article 179 or Illegal Use of Uniforms and Insignia of the Revised Penal Code will be filed against the suspect before the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office.
