PHILIPPINE National Police chief, General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar on Sunday praised a police officer in Tacloban City who in the nick of time prevented a woman from killing herself.

Police Corporal Rico Estrella of the Tacloban City Police Station 2 run to the 3rd floor of a city bus terminal last Wednesday after his curiosity was aroused by the presence of a large group of people milling outside, their eyes glued at the woman standing aimlessly near the ledge and appearing all set to jump.

The cop managed to reach the 3rd floor on time and grabbed the woman who was immediately brought to the local police’s Women and Children Protection Desk for proper attention and intervention.

Gen. Eleazar said that a medical check showed that the woman was manifesting some symptoms of postpartum depression and experiencing financial woes amid the pandemic.

The top cop tasked the local police to provide any assistance to the woman and her family.

“Saludo ako kay Police Corporal Estrella dahil isang buhay ang naisalba nang dahil sa kanyang agarang pagresponde sa insidente. Gagawa din tayo ng paraan na matulungan sila upang makapag-paabot ng tulong para naman mabawasan ang mga pagsubok na kinahaharap nila,” he said.

Following the incident, members of the local police station agreed to shell out money from their own pockets in order to sponsor the wedding of the couple and the baptism of their kids.
