PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte accepted the nomination as the vice presidential candidate of the ruling Partido Demokratikong Pilipino – Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in the 2022 national elections.

This was announced by PDP-Laban vice president and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles in a statement, including the party’s five senatorial bets.

According to Nograles, Duterte accepted the endorsement of the party and “agreed to make the sacrifice and heed the clamor of the people.”

However, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque did not confirm the report, but said the President met with PDP-Laban officials Monday evening.

Nograles said the President’s decision was prompted by calls from PDP-Laban councils, from regional to the barangay levels that want a transition of leadership that will guarantee continuity of the administration’s programs.

He added the party councils want Duterte to seek the vice presidency to ensure that the government’s COVID-19 response and vaccination program will be sustained in the critical stage of pandemic.

It can be recalled that Duterte said he will run for vice president in order to evade lawsuits.

Latest surveys showed that Duterte is leading the vice presidential race while his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is leading the presidential race.

The PDP-Laban announced at least five names for senatorial race — SAGIP Party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta; Public Works and Highway Secretary Mark Villar; Information Secretary Gringo Honasan, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo.
