DPWH works overtime on Binondo-Intramuros bridge

THE Department of Public Works and Highway is ramping up work on the iconic Binondo-Intramuros Bridge.

DPWH Secretary Roger G. Mercado said they are working day and night to be able to open the said bridge by early April.

“We are ramping up with night work, in addition to keeping up with daytime construction activities for the finishing works on the Binondo – Intramuros Bridge Project,” he said.

Mercado said DPWH Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office Operations Emil K. Sadain has reported that asphalt resurfacing has commence on the ramps and main bridge deck as the contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation needs to get as much work done as possible to open the new Binondo – Intramuros Bridge by early week of April.

Work is expected to further pick up with equipment and materials around the construction site and durable pavement markings will be placed once asphalt paving is complete.

According to Sadain, the iconic design of the two-way four-lane steel box tied-arch bridge (basket-handle type) has the making of a future landmark in Manila — an outstanding engineering accomplishment that is about to revered across the Philippines.

Sadain said the project is anticipated to be among the most photograph bridge in Metro Manila when it opens.

Construction of Binondo – Intramuros Bridge Project is implemented by UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1 (Bilateral) under supervision of former Project Director Virgilio C. Castillo and continued by Project Director Benjamin A. Bautista with Project Manager Melchor Kabiling directly in-charge of the project.

About 30,000 vehicles daily between the two busy districts of Intramuros and Binondo will benefit in this flagship infrastructure project of President Rodrigo Duterte administration.

This additional fix link to improve the road transport network capacity and efficiency in Metro Manila and alleviate traffic congestion is financed by a grant aid from the People’s Republic of China.
