THOUSANDS of Kalibonhon active transport users will enjoy a safe bike lane network by December 2023 as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday started construction of expanded cycling infrastructures in Kalibo, Aklan.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said that the initiative goes beyond bike lanes, as cyclists and road users need to be safe.

“We want to establish the necessary infrastructure to ensure cycling is a safe mode of daily travel, no longer just for leisure,” Bautista said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of active transport infrastructure in Kalibo.

Bautista cited cycling’s numerous health benefits, adding that active transport also preserves the environment.

“The increasing number of cyclists in a place like Kalibo can redirect its growth path towards preserving the environment,” Bautista added.

The transport chief expressed confidence that as Kalibo progresses, cycling will make the residents healthy and even help the municipality reduce road traffic.

“We are presenting you with a clear option towards attaining economic growth without adding more gasoline-fed vehicles on your roads,” said Bautista, expressing hope that he can bike with cyclists and other stakeholders when the bike lanes are completed on December 5.

The expanded active transport infra project involves the establishment of 13.16 kilometers of bike lanes along selected roads of Kalibo.

Targeted to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023, the bike lanes will benefit active transport users, including tourists, students, and employees.

The Transport Department is seen to expand the protected bike lane networks to 2,400 kilometers by 2028 throughout the country.
