THE Department of Tourism (DOT) thanked the athletes from the Philippines, especially those who bagged Olympic medals for serving as an inspiration to many Filipinos who have been experiencing hardships due to COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the DOT congratulated Nesthy Petecio for winning the silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s featherweight division.

Petecio’s victory brings pride and joy to the Philippines as she is the first Filipina boxer to bag an Olympic medal, ending the country’s boxing medal drought since Onyok Velasco’s silver medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

The DOT also celebrates Nesthy’s silver medal, along with Hidilyn Diaz’ gold, as these have led the Philippines to a multi-medal finish in the Olympics, a first for the country after 89 years.

At the same time, the Department expressed its well wishes to Eumir Marcial, Carlo Paalam, EJ Obiena, Bianca Pagdanganan, and Yuka Saso in their remaining games.

The DOT also thanked the rest of the dedicated athletes from the Philippines.
