DOT bares efforts to make PH Muslim-friendly destination
IN an effort to establish the Philippines as a preferred destination for Muslim travelers, the Department of Tourism (DOT) bared its comprehensive efforts and initiatives at the 19th Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) held in Kuala Lumpur from September 12 to 15, 2023.
Under the insightful guidance of Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar, who oversees Halal and Muslim-friendly Tourism within the DOT, attendees at MIHAS gained valuable insights into the Philippines’ readiness to welcome Muslim tourists.
Abubakar shared the DOT’s flagship projects for Halal and Muslim-friendly tourism, which include the implementation of Memorandum Circular No. 2020-010 governing Muslim-friendly Accommodation Establishments and the vibrant Colors of Mindanao campaign.
While acknowledging that the Philippines still has progress to make in becoming a leader in Muslim-friendly tourism like Malaysia, she expressed a warm invitation for travelers to experience the nation’s unique offerings.
MIHAS, the world’s largest annual tradeshow for Halal products and services, served as an ideal platform for the Philippines to highlight its commitment to fostering cross-border economic investments and business partnerships in the realm of Halal and Muslim-friendly tourism.
As of April 2023, the DOT has recorded a total of 289 Halal Certified or Muslim Friendly Accommodation establishments in Manilla, Palawan, Cebu, Bohol and Boracay.
The DOT will also be providing funds for the accreditation of no less than 50 halal restaurants to add to the already existing 65 halal certified and 172 Muslim Friendly certified restaurants.
The DOT is currently developing a Muslim Travelogue, Halal Recipe Book for a Halal Culinary video series, Hijri Calendar, Mindanao Halal Culinary video series, BIMP EAGA Halal culinary series coffee table book and the Eid Al Fitr Halal Food Festival that would provide Muslim friendly information and services to Muslim visitors.
Halal tourism is one of the fastest growing travel industries in the world.
The Global Islamic Economy predicted that it will reach $ 274 billion dollars in expenditures this year alone.
