CONTROVERSIAL director Darryl Yap whose movie, ‘Maid in Malacañang’ is breaking box-office records is having the last laugh. It has been talked about since it was conceived and the still photo showing the character of the late President Cory Aquino (played by Giselle Sanchez) playing mahjong with the nuns, all the more fuelled the controversy. Umalma ang mga madre at kulang na lamang ay mag-people power sa opisina ng MTRCB. Some wanted to boycott the film.

The board of review has given ‘Maid in Malacañang’ a PG classification.

It may contain a theme which would require parental supervision and guidance. It is a dramatization of the last 72 hours of the Marcos family in the Palace in 1986 and not meant as a documentary.

Unofficially, ‘Maid in Malacañang’ grossed P63 million in three days which is unprecedented considering the pandemic we are going through.

New song releases

THE Juans drop a new single titled “Salamin.” This track, part of The Juans most recent and critically-acclaimed album “LIWANAG” is a meaningful song about being strong in the face of life’s trials. The Juans wrap this evocative message in a modern-sounding, mid-tempo pop song that is at once moody and stirring. “Salamin” is written by Chael Adriano and is arranged by Japs Mendoza.

“Sa Susunod Na Lang” is the mid-tempo pop rocker from a band called Crash. Powering Crash is this emo-driven song about the aftermath of a rejection. Written by Samuel Ramos and recorded with his Crash cohorts Julian Avellana and Ken Delos Santos, “Sa Susunod Na Lang” is rocking, guitar solo filled number that would make any listener bob their heads.

Ferodina’s emo-filled new song titled “Karapatan” is a love-stricken story about falling hard for your best friend but not being able to act on it for fear of losing the friendship. That’s the predicament Ferodina composers Brian Feliciano and Fender Dimalanta found themselves writing and singing about. And with band mates Steven Naguit Joaquin Rodrigo, delivers this power ballad with forlorn-tinged fervor.

Modern Day Dream returns with a brand-new song in “Takipsilim” and delivers another modern pop rock sounding tune that from the start is their trademark. And just songwriters before him, singer-songwriter James Mollo was inspired by the twilight hour and was moved to write this song about feelings of emptiness and choked desperation. But despite the seeming depressing themes, that didn’t stop this song from being melodic, chill to the point of almost floating. BY REMY UMEREZ
