DiegoDIEGO Loyzaga made a wise decision when he moved to Viva Entertainment as he is now doing one project after another. He starred with AJ Raval in the movie “Death of a Girlfriend” and with Cristine Reyes in the Korean series adaptation, “Encounter”.

He has now just finished “Bekis on the Run” with Kylie Versoza and will soon start shooting “Patungong Tayo”, his first movie with real life girlfriend Barbie Imperial. He feels so lucky to be directed by Joel Lamangan in “Bekis on the Run”.

“First time to work with Direk Joel and I consider it as a milestone for me, kasi he has worked before with both my mom and dad (Teresa Loyzaga and Cesar Montano),” he says. “Mabuti na lang, naabutan ko pa siya and I feel so proud about it.”

So how is his experience working with Lamangan? “Nakakatakot noong una, kasi may pagka-terror daw siya. Pero in fairness to him, lahat ng ginagawa niya, nasa lugar naman, kasi ang mga pinagagawa niya, puro tama naman para sa ikagaganda ng eksena. He really motivates his actors well and I’m happy to be given the chance to work with him. Takot akong mapagalitan niya kaya I always come to the set prepared and ready to do my best. Kaya I’m glad na natapos namin ang movie nang walang incident among direk and the rest of the cast.”

So how is it doing a movie with gays or bekis as lead characters? “First of alI, I want to make it clear that I don’t play a gay character in the movie. ‘Yung brother ko rito, si Christian Bables, ang siyang gay, at ‘yung adoptive mother namin, Lou Veloso as Pacing. I support the LGBT community. And not only them but all human beings who want to live and love, just like the rest of us. We should all respect them. I have lots of friends who are gay and there’s nothing wrong with them, masaya nga silang kasama.”

He is glad that “Bekis on the Run” aim to present the sad plight of some gays. “In my role as Andres, I see my brother being bullied by other kids since childhood, simply because he’s gay. The movie shows first hand how some people can be disgusting at times in their unfair treatment of gays. Even child gays are being shamed and that’s wrong.”

How does the story go? “In the movie, my brother and I tried to rob a construction company to finance the surgery of our adoptive mother but then we bungled it so naging wanted kami. But the people rally behind us when Lou Veloso as Pacing appeared on TV and appealed to the TV people na hindi naman kami talaga masamang tao ng brother kong si Donald.”

Will he be willing to play a gay role? “Given the right role and the right script with the right story and message, I won’t limit myself as an actor. I’ll consider doing it a challenge to grow in portraying other kinds of roles. Sobrang grateful nga ako kay God at sa buong Viva na sunud-sunod ang work ko. So we have to do our part as actors to give our best. Dapat hindi maging pasaway sa set ng lock in shoots in following all the health protocols habang may pandemic.”
