Deserving candidates

CANDIDATES in next year’s presidential, congressional and local elections must sufficiently prove that they have genuine concern for the future of this Third World nation.

Admittedly, there’s now that urgent need to stamp out wrongdoings in the bureaucracy and restore the confidence of the Filipino people, notably the poor, in the government.

Despite its all-out campaign against graft and corruption, the outgoing administration concedes that larceny continues to take place in state offices and agencies.

Indeed, there’s still a cabal of thieves, crooks and vultures that makes a mockery of the Duterte administration’s nationwide multi-pronged anti-corruption campaign.

That’s why well-meaning Filipinos ought to help the electorate in choosing the right people to chart the destiny of the country and the people during the next three to six years.

“Kailangang mahubaran na ang mga kandidatong nagpapanggap na mga matitino, mababait, matulungin at maka-Diyos,” said a farmer who now wants to work abroad.

“Panahon na para maghanap ng maganda-gangang trabaho sa labas ng bansa dahil lubog na lubog na sa utang ang maraming magsasaka na kagaya ko,” he fumed.

This beleaguered rice and corn farmer cannot send his three children – a son and two daughters – to college if he continues to till his two-hectare farm in the province.

Of course, nobody can blame this poor farmer for deciding to leave his unproductive farm, which he inherited from his father a few years ago, and try his luck abroad.

Pero baka magbago pa ang kanyang desisyong magtrabaho sa labas ng bansa kung maraming matitinong kandidato ang mananalo sa darating na eleksyon.
