WITH the threat of the possible spread of dengue fever to other areas, the public urged the authorities to destroy the breeding places of mosquitoes.

The deadly disease, which killed nearly 1,500 people in Asia, including Filipinos, in 1998, is transmitted by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito.

In many places across the Philippines, many people live with empty cans, bottles and flower vases around their homes.

These are among the favorite breeding places of mosquitoes not only in the metropolis but elsewhere.

Mayor Joy Belmonte had earlier declared a dengue outbreak in Quezon City following the death of 10 residents.

Of the 10 fatalities, eight were minors, according to reports reaching the office of the QC mayor and the Department of Health (DOH).

Fears about the possible spread of the deadly disease to other areas were heightened when heavy rains were reported in some places.

With the significant increase in dengue fever cases, eight local government units (LGUs) in three regions may soon declare dengue outbreaks in said places.

Certainly, the rising number of dengue fever cases in some parts of the country must cause great concern among the people.
